HydroClean Products provides specialty water and fireside vessel inspection, equipment cleaning and water conditioning services primarily in the industrial and commercial markets. We specialize in preventive maintenance contracts on the water side of your heating and cooling loops, and equipment. The boilers of today are much more fuel efficient, but they are less forgiving in terms of scale build-up. The low water mass, combined with thinner walled heat exchangers, and higher heat per sq. ft. of heating surface creates a perfect storm, overtime for a plate-out effect on the water side of the vessel. This is especially apparent on systems that are not chemically treated. In fact, the #1 reason boilers fail is scale.

We have discovered the rate of heat exchanger failures in hydronic systems have risen greatly over the last decade primarily due to scale build-up and poorly maintained system loops. If the water chemistry is not perfect in your heating and cooling loops you are pretty much guaranteed to eventually develop scale on the water side of the boiler, and its the owners responsibility to maintain the water flowing through the boilers and other equipment.

All boiler & water heater manufactures strongly recommend annual water side inspections of the pressure vessel and requires heat exchangers to be clean to ensure long life, perform and maintain factory warranties.

Overheating will cause steel and copper-finned water tube boilers to soften, bulge, and eventually split open due to the weakened metal.
Cast iron sectional boilers are most effected by scale (especially magnetite) and will weaken overtime by high internal heat and cyclic fatigue causing uneven expansion and contraction in internal areas of the boiler.

Fact: The #1 Reason Boilers Fail is Caused by Scale. Poor Water Quality & Lack of Proper Maintenance
Studies have shown that only a 1/16" of scale is equivalent to 3" of steel, as a comparison example of reduced heat transfer. Scale deposits act like a thermal barrier on the water side causing expensive heat to be bypassed and exhausted through the flue, in lieu of being absorbed into the hydronic system.
​
Scale weakens the metal and eventually damages heat exchangers. As system water is flowing through a boiler, the water is heated, and this high internal heat causes minerals to fall out of solution, and plate-out on the hot areas of the heat exchanger. Typically, the scale develops where heat is the highest, and flow is lowest. Also, as the boiler starts and stops, the scale slowly accumulates in thin layers. While this scale is forming in layers, dense magnetite particles are floating around the system and eventually getting encapsulated within the calcium and magnesium layers, further reducing the overall heat transfer. The scale continues to accumulate reducing fuel efficiency, and eventually causes a vessel failure due to overheating.
